Description & Objectives

Research Description

Multidisciplinary research activities based on knowledge and expertise in satellite remote sensing, ocean acoustics, signal processing, electromagnetic radiation physics, sea ice physics, oceanography, boundary layer meteorology, air-sea-ice interaction and information technology for management and dissemination of satellite based information.

Develop and validate retrieval algorithms for ocean and sea ice parameters from various satellite Earth observation data, which in are used in studies of upper layer mesoscale ocean processes, air-sea-ice interaction, climate change studies and in operational oceanography.

Specific Research Objectives

  • To advance research and monitoring of upper ocean processes and dynamics by synergetic use of satellite, in-situ data and modelling.
  • To advance the retrieval algorithms for converting satellite data to geophysical quantities.
  • To strengthen the use of satellite and ocean acoustic data (remote sensing of the oceans) for ocean monitoring, model validations, data assimilation and prediction.
  • To study Essential Climate Variables with emphasis on high latitude and Arctic region and facilitate and stimulate high quality and original multidisciplinary satellite based Earth system research and education.

  • Polar Acoustics and Oceanography

    UNDER-ICE is an interdisciplinary project involving physical oceanography, ocean acoustics, sea ice research and studies of biological production (net community primary production) in Fram Strait and northwards towards the Gakkel Ridge.
