PRODEX CRYOSAT: CryoSat postlaunch validation study for sea ice

Collection and analysis of sea ice data from various field experiments in the Arctic for validation of ice thickness data from CryoSat

Objectives

The overall objective is to study radar altimeter signals of sea ice and validate retrieval of ice thickness from CryoSat-2 data, using results from CryoVex 2011 and other field  experiments in the Arctic

Project Summary

The project will:

1)    Collect and analyze sea ice and snow data from field experiments with aircraft, helicopter, vessels and ice camps in order to validate CryoSat retrieval of ice thickness and study radar altimeter signals from different sea ice types and sea ice conditions

2)    Collect and analyze co-located satellite data from SIRAL, SAR and optical satellites for studies of SIRAL level 1b and level 2 data according to ice types and ice roughness

3)    Validate the ice thickness retrievals from CryoSat-2 by use of the data from the field experiments.
