The TOPAZ modeling system for the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans is upgraded

The TOPAZ system is an ocean forecasting system developed under the TOPAZ project in EC Framework V. The TOPAZ project was finished in 2003. The lessons learned in that project where carried into the MERSEA Strand 1 and MERSEA-IP projects, where the TOPAZ system has been run in a operational mode, providing weekly forecasts of ocean currents, ocean temperature and ice conditions in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Presently the model system used to provide forecasts covers the North Atlantic, Nordic and Arctic seas. It is based on the HYCOM ocean model and includes a sea-ice model.

Nansen Sentrene har møte med Statsminister Jens Stoltenberg i St. Petersburg

Statsminister Jens Stoltenberg møtte i dag Russiske klimaforskere og -studenter ombord på den historiske isbryteren Krasin i St. Petersburg. Statsministeren ble presentert det nære norsk-russiske samarbeidet innen Arktisk forskning som er etablert med hhv. Nansen Senter for Miljø og Fjernmåling (NERSC) i Bergen og Norsk Polar Institutt. Vertskap for møtet på Krasin var Arctic and Antractic Research Institute.
Nansen Senteret i Bergen har engasjert seg sterk i forsknings- og utdanningssamarbeide med Russland i de siste 15 årene. I 1992 tok Prof. Ola M.

Research Fellow (PhD position) in climate modelling at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Bergen, Norway

A 3-year position as PhD student is available at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center from 01.09.2007. The Nansen Center is a non-profit research institute affiliated with the University of Bergen (UoB), and the PhD-degree will be formally defended at the Geophysical institute at UoB.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in numerical geophysical modelling, dynamic meteorology, physical oceanography, climatology or related fields, or have submitted the Master thesis for assessment by the application deadline.

Annual report for 2006

Our human resources and expertise are the capital of the Center and by the end of 2006 the Nansen Center employed a staff of 64 persons from 14 nations - including nine in adjunct positions.
The project income for 2006 was mainly from the Research Council of Norway, the European Commission (EU), European Space Agency, oil companies, the Norwegian Space Center and INTAS. Substantial financial supports have been received from G.C. Rieber Funds and Frank Mohn ASA by Trond Mohn. By the end of 2006, the Nansen Center participated in 14 EU projects and co-ordinated four of these projects.

The Geophysical Institute has an opening for a professorship in oceanography that may be combined with the post as Director of the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (NERSC). Applicants should indicate in their application whether this directorship would be of interest.

Applicants should have substantial research leadership experience as well as experience in coordinating research activities and in strategic research planning.

The Fridtjof Nansen Award for 2007 to Professor Ola M. Johannessen

Founding director of the Nansen Center and professor at Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen Ola M. Johannessen will to day receive the Fridtjof Nansen Award for Prominent Research in Science and Medicine for 2007. He is given the award for his “path-breaking research on dynamic oceanographic processes in the Arctic marginal ice zone”.

The Fridtjof Nansen Award for Prominent Research in Science and Medicine is established by the Fridtjof Nansen Fund and given to a Norwegian scientist who has made scientific contributions at a very high international level.

Post-Doc position open at The Mohn-Sverdrup Center for Global Ocean Studies and Operational Oceanography

The Mohn-Sverdrup Center at the Nansen Center seeks one post-doc for 2 years for eddy-resolving modelling studies of the Nordic Seas:

The post.doc will continue the developments of a high-resolution HYCOM model covering the Nordic Seas. The model system will be used to study the mesoscale eddy activity in the area, in order to achieve a better understanding of the large scale circulation and mixing processes.

The post-doc will work in a dynamic team of 15 and will participate to collaborative project work with both international and Norwegian partners.

Polarårsøknad avslått

Forskningsrådet utlyste i mars 2006 tverrfaglige og grensesperengende søknader til det internasjonale polaråret. Nansensenteret ledet en stor nasjonal polarårsøknad "Climate of the Arctic and its Role for Europe (IPY-CARE)".

Søknaden ble i juni 2006 avslatt av Forskningsrådet. Avslaget var meget kort, ekspertene som vurderte søknaden hadde mangelfull kompetanse, og søknadsbehandlingen var ikke i samsvar med Forskningsrådets utlysningstekst.

Vacant Ph.D. Position Causes and Consequences of the Extreme Climate Variability in the high North Atlantic

Job Description: The winter surface air temperature at Svalbard (78 ºN) has increased by 4 degrees C since 1912, which is one of the largest observed temperature changes on the Earth. The temperature changes are accompanied by considerable ice edge retreat as well as intensification of the storm activity. Changes have culminated in 2006 with April being 12 dergr. C warmer than on average and ice edge retreating by 500 km by September. It is not a simple task however to assign a single set of causes responsible for the obvious polar amplification of the global warming in this area.

Vacant programmer position at Mohn-Sverdrup Center


The Mohn-Sverdrup Center at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Bergen, Norway, seeks a programmer engineer for our operational ocean forecasting system.

The programmer engineer shall maintain the operations of the TOPAZ ocean forecasting system, including interactive forecasting on the internet.

MoU signed with the Anna University in Chennai, India

A Memorandum of Understanding has been made the between Institute of Remote Sensing at Anna University, Chennai, India and Nansen Center affiliated with the University of Bergen.
The MoU was signed by the Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan and Director Ola M. Johannessen during the Indian Republic Day function at the Anna University on 25th January.

The MoU defines the framework for higher educational and research cooperation between the institutions including the Indian, Russian and Chinese institutions of the Nansen Group.

Job vacancy: Research assistant in marine remote sensing

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Bergen announces a position as research assistant in marine remote sensing. Candidates should have a cand. scient, or master degree in physics, geophysics or similar background that is relevant for working with satellite remote sensing data.

The work will focus on processing and analysis of satellite data over ocean and sea-ice areas for retrieval of geophysical information on ocean surface currents, waves, near surface wind, surface films and sea ice parameters.

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center - 20 years in Science

On November 28. 1986 the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center were founded by the “scientific Foundation at the University of Bergen”, G.C. Rieber AS and Tenneco Oil Inc..

On Friday on November 24. 2006 the Nansen Center celebrated its 20 years anniversary with an international scientific colloquium at Marineholmen.

The Arctic is doubly exposed to the consequences of global warming. First of all, the region undergoes concrete impacts of the rise of temperature, which is more sensitive at the poles: the melting of the permafrost undermines the foundations of entire villages and compromises their future existence.

Book on data assimilation by Geir Evensen

The EnKF is a sophisticated sequental data assimilation method. It applies an ensemble of model states to represent the error statistics of the model estimate, it applies ensemble integrations to predict the error statistics forward in time, and it uses an analysis scheme which operates directly on the ensemble of model states when observations are assimilated. The EnKF has proven to efficiently handle strongly nonlinear dynamics and large state spaces and is now used in realistic applications with primitive equation models for the ocean and atmosphere.
