Vacancy: Post Doctoral Position in Regional Climate Modeling

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Bergen, Norway, offers a post doctoral fellowship position under the research project A User-Defined Approach To Utilize Climate Change Information In Local Implementation Of National Construction Standards (RECON). The fellowship is funded for 3 years (2010 – 2013). The RECON project aims to improve utility of the climate change information at the regional and local-scales. The work will focus on numerical simulation experiments using the research and weather forecasting model WRF to provide quantitative information required by the construction and transport economic sectors under realistic climate change scenarios.

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (http://www.nersc.no) is an independent research foundation located in Bergen, Norway and affiliated with the University of Bergen. The centre currently employs about 64 persons from 14 nations. The Nansen Center is the founder of the Nansen Group with sister organizations in Russia, India, China and South Africa. It is also a partner in the Bjerknes Research Centre in Bergen, the Norwegian Centre of Excellence in climate research.

Responsibility and required skills: The nature of the proposed work requires the following skills: advanced knowledge of WRF, FORTRAN-95, parallel algorithms and protocols (MPI) and UNIX, comprehensive knowledge of MATLAB, downscaling approaches and elements of climate modelling, elementary statistics and numerical methods. Good skills in oral and written English are expected.

Documented qualifications: (1) Candidates must prove their familiarity with WRF at an advanced level; (2) Ph.D. degree or equivalent in meteorology/oceanography or related fields must be documented; (3) Record of research publications should be given; (4) Experience with proposal writing, project work, team work, and socio-economic modelling. The candidate should provide contact information for 3 reference persons.
