New book; Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms

Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms by Pettersson and Pozdnyakov, 2012.Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms by Pettersson and Pozdnyakov, 2012.The book Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms has recently been published by Springer- Praxis. The book build on the experience the Nansen Centers have build up during the last 25 years in use of satellite remote sensing, airborne survey, field observations and ocean ecosystem modelling in detection and monitoring of harmful algal blooms in coastal and ocean waters. The impact of harmful algal blooms are particular important for the coastal aquaculture industry in Norway and several events of harmful algal blooms has caused severe losses to this industry.

Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms covers a complex set of issues related to the nature, environmental conditions of origination, and comprehensive monitoring, including satellite Earth observation data, of harmful algal blooms (HABs). It describes one of the first attempts to organize integrated HAB monitoring with a synergetic use of different satellite missions and sensors, in situ measurements, as well as biogeochemical/ ecosystem numerical simulations. Focusing primarily on relatively high biomass blooms that are advected with ocean currents, the book:

  • draws on current and future satellite earth observation data to present visible perspectives of a future, more efficient HAB monitoring system;
  • provides a thorough analysis of the role and feasibility of integrated remote sensing and in situ observations of HABs;
  • covers practical aspects of organizing and conducting real-time evaluation and weekly forecasting of algal bloom events in different oceanographic areas;
  • emphasizes practical applications, impacting on marine ecology, national economy, health, food and safety, and quality assurance;
  • uses remote sensing and ecological/biochemical numerical modeling for data assimilation to predict HABs.

Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms is co-authored by Lasse H. Pettersson at the Nansen Center and Dmitry Pozdnyakov and the Nansen International Center in St. Petersburg.

Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms is no. 6 in the Nansen Center´s Polar series published by Springer-Praxis and is available on-line from
