Crash Course on Data Assimilation in Bergen this week
The participants and lecturers at the data assimilation crash course. The Nordic Centre of Excellence Ensemble-based data assimilation for environmental monitoring and prediction - EmblA coordinated by the Nansen Center in Bergen organises this week a 4-days summer school for 22 students from 13 countries world-wide. The participants are either early stage scientists or PhD students with beginner or no notions of data assimilation. 70 qualified participants have applied for participation. The 11 lecturers come from Norway, USA, Demark, Finland and UK teaches the courses during the next four days. The summer school Crash Course on Data Assimilation - Theoretical foundations and advanced applications with focus on ensemble methods will provide the participants knowledge on how to practically apply data assimilation in their research. The crash course will cover the basic notions of data assimilation, focusing on ensemble methods, illustrated with real-scale / operational applications and with the aid of practical exercises.
The lecturers and their scientific topics covered, includes:
- Geir Evensen (IRIS & NERSC, Norway): Basic principles of inference and theory of variational and sequential Gaussian analysis, EnKF fundamentals
- Laurent Bertino (NERSC, Norway): Background statistics, spatial covariances, anamorphosis for non Gaussian variables
- Alberto Carrassi (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for chaotic dynamics
- Francois Counillon (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for climate prediction
- Remus Hanea (STATOIL, Norway): Data Assimilation for oil reservoirs
- John Harlim (PSU, USA): Model error in data assimilation
- Jesper Mariegaard (DHI, Denmark): Operational assimilation for sea-level and tides
- Patrick Raanes (NERSC, Norway): Tutorial on data assimilation using Python
- Annette Samuelsen (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for the ecosystem
- Mikhail Sofiev (FMI, Finland): Data assimilation for chemical transport and aerosol
- Peter Jan van Leeuwen (Un. of Reading, UK): Particle filters
