The Chief Minister of Kerala visited the Nansen Center

Indian and Norwegian research institutions have been collaborating for decades. A high-level visit from the Government of Kerala, India to the Nansen Center resulted in concrete plans for extensive collaborations in the future, with a strong focus on climate and environmental research.

Today, we were honoured to welcome the Chief Minister of Kerala Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, the Minister for Fisheries Shri V. Abdurahiman, their delegation, and the rector or the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), to the Nansen Center. The aim of the visit was to give an overview of past and current research collaborations and to discuss future collaboration. Representatives from the Institute of Marine Research, NOFIMA, and Nord University were also present.

India is one of nine countries that the Norwegian government's Panorama strategy for international research cooperation prioritizes. In the Norwegian government's Strategy for cooperation with India, the climate, the environment, and the ocean are among the priority areas of cooperation. The collaboration between the Norwegian and Indian institutions thus aligns well with our national strategies and ambitions.

The Nansen Center is one of the Norwegian institutions that has been developing and fostering Norwegian-Indian collaborations since the 1990's. Establishing the Nansen Environmental Research Centre-India in Kerala in 1999 was a milestone for collaborations between Norway and India. The centre has been beneficial for research cooperation and capacity building through exchange visits, student supervision, conferences, and research schools. Important research topics are climate change, marine fisheries, aquaculture, fish food and nutrition, coastal planning, and water quality. These issues are highly relevant from local to national levels for planning and assessment to improve quality of life.
