Useful Arctic Knowledge - Partnership for Research and Education funded by the INTPART program.
Objectives
The overarching goal of UAK is to build and maintain strong partnership between educational and research institution in Norway, USA and Canada.The specific objectives are:
Establishing a cross-disciplinary partnership in Norway, Canada and USA working on the selected Arctic topics.
Developing joint visiting program, seminars and workshops to improve the communication between research disciplines, educational programs, andcommunities.
Establishing cross-disciplinary research training at PhD and Post-Doctoral levels with focus on the mediator role between natural science, and data managers.
Providing mobility grants for PhD students, Post-Docs and scientists to visit partner institutions
Organize workshops and exchange visits for young scientists as well as senior scientists.
Publishing joint reports and articles with early carrier scientist in collaboration with experienced scientists.
Plan and develop new research and innovation proposals.
Project Summary
UAK will develop long-term collaboration between Norway, Canada and USA to improve multidisciplinary in Arctic research and education. AUK is focussed on selected topics of importance to local communities and operators in the Arctic, namely the nature of natural and human-made hazards and ocean acoustic environment, all of which can have significant negative impact. The research and training activities will be implemented through Research School, workshops and exchange visit program for PhD students, Post-Docs and senior scientists. UAK will contribute to establishment of educational programs within Arctic research supporting the cross-disciplinary activities in INTAROS. The traditional education programs at Norwegian Universities are primarily domain specific e.g. natural science, social sciences, scientific data management, and community based monitoring. UAK aims to bring in more multi-disciplinarity into education programs at the involved Norwegian universities. UAK will extend and strengthen training and education of early career scientists in coordination with INTAROS. UAK will therefore focus on building long-term cross-disciplinary research networks within selected Arctic topics, involving and engaging experienced and early career scientists. Furthermore, UAK will contribute to establishment of educational programs supporting the crossdisciplinary activities in INTAROS. The traditional education programs at Norwegian universities are primarily domain specific e.g. natural science, social sciences and scientific data management. There are few cross-disciplinary courses in Arctic topics. UAK will therefore bring in more multi-disciplinarity into education programs at the involved universities. In UAK we will address the following topics
• Cross-disciplinary data management and integration.
• Natural and man-made hazards
• Ocean acoustic environment
• Community based monitoring
• Communication between academic research groups and local communities
Some of these topics are new and under establishment in the education programs in Norway and will benefit from the international partnership of UAK.The partnership consists of Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, University in Bergen - Earth Science, Western Norway University of Applied Science, The Norwegian Meteorological Institute, University of Colorado, University of Manitoba, and University of Calgary.
