eVITA-EnKF: Forecasting non-linear systems using the ensemble Kalman filter and related methods

eVITA-EnKF is a methodological project from the Research Council of Norway, aimed at multidisciplinary applications of advanced data assimilation methods, the EnKF and related methods.

Objectives

Develop the EnKF and related data assimilation methods for widespread use in a wide range of forecasting applications.

Specific objectives are threefold:

  • Theoretical: advance the statistical and mathematical theory for different data assimilation methods related to the EnKF and develop new algorithm via cross-fertilization.
  • Practical : implement the new schemes on a variety of applications (oceanograph, weather forecast, oil reservoir, bioeconomic management, epidemiology) and computer architectures.
  • Communication: to make the EnKF (and related methods) widely used in new/upcoming fields, to demonstrate it operationally, to share our enthousiasm with a larger public.

Project Summary

The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and related data assimilation methods methods are being applied to the following modelling systems:

  • Ocean physics: The TOPAZ ocean and sea-ice forecasting system, using HYCOM and the EnKF. (NERSC, contact: F. Counillon and P. Sakov)
  • Ocean biology: The ecosystem module of TOPAZ, using the coupled HYCOM-NORWECOM physical and biogeochemical model and the EnKF with a Gaussian anamorphosis. (NERSC, contact: E. Simon)
  • Weather forecasting:
    • The HIRLAM EPS and ETKF (met.no, contact: J. Bojarova)
    • The MM5/WRF and EnKF (Storm Weather, contact: I. Lie)
  • Reservoir modelling: The Eclipse oil reservoir model and the EnKF (StatoilHydro, contact: G. Evensen)
  • Bioeconomic management: sustainable management of marine resources with a stochastic market and stochastic biology (NHH, contact: L. Sandal)
  • Health, Influenza-like illness early warning (Ecole des Mines de Paris, contact: H. Wackernagel.
