Research Description

Book about radioactive pollution in the marine and Arctic environment - the results of the RADARC project.Book about radioactive pollution in the marine and Arctic environment - the results of the RADARC project.In order to fulfil the vision of the Nansen Center societal benefit and use of our knowledge and research is important. Within all three other major natural science research areas results are achieved with such benefit to the society.

During resent years the Center has expanded the climate modelling studies to also incorporate research with important social and economical impact. This includes among other regional sea level studies under future climate scenarios for local authorities and development of new process models involving socio-economical variables with city scale urbanized large-eddy simulation model (PALM) as the flagship of this activity. Also research on spreading and of pollution and radioactivity in the marine environment are examples of research results of benefit to the society. The services developed with monitoring of harmful algae blooms and water quality is of benefit to both authorities and industry.

 

Specific Research Objectives

  • To respond to societal needs and concerns related to our strategic research areas such as marine transportation in the Northern Sea Route, offshore oil and gas, fisheries and aquaculture, and spreading of pollution in the Arctic region.
  • To disclose feedbacks and connections between the micro- and macroclimate and human activities.
  • To facilitate the use of climate predictions in urban planning and management for required variables, such as precipitation, air temperature, sea level, wind load and air quality.
  • To develop competence within assessment analysis, to be used in socio-economic studies
