Summer School opened on Land Hydrology and Cryosphere of the Arctic and Northern Eurasia in a changing climate
The summer school Land Hydrology and Cryosphere of the Arctic and Northern Eurasia in a changing climate gathers this week 52 students and lecturers from 10 countries in Repina near St. Petersburg. The summer school is organized under the auspices of the European Commission FP7 project EuRuCAS - European-Russian Centre for cooperation in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic environmental and climate research, coordinated by the Nansen International Environmental Research Center (NIERSC) in St. Petersburg. Director Leonid Bobylev opened the summer school with expectations that the summer school will contribute to increased scientific cooperation between Europe and Russia in the field of Arctic and Sub-Arctic environmental and climate science.
The EuRuCAS Summer School program includes lectures on Land Hydrology, Cryosphere and Climate of the Arctic and Northern Eurasia by leading Russian and European scientists. During the opening session Jean-Pierre Contzen (von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, Belgium) gave a presentation on Space weather and climate change. Prof. Stein Sandven (Director, NERSC) presented the European Copernicus program with focus on long-term monitoring of the Arctic using satellite Earth observation data.
Participants of the EuRuCAS summer school 2014.The EuRuCAS Summer School will during this week address the following research topics:
1. On-going climate change in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic
2. Hydrological Cycle of the Arctic and Northern Eurasia in the warming climate
3. Glaciers and their changes due to global warming
4. Ice seasons and ecology in lakes and rivers in changing climate
5. Permafrost and terrestrial ecosystems in the Arctic and Northern Eurasia
6. Greenhouse gases in the Northern Eurasia linked to the permafrost and hydrology
The program includes student presentations and posters as well as student working sessions in order to write a summary report on the research topics addressed.
