Kalkalger blomstrer i fjord- og kystvannet

Det melkehvite vannet som sees i fjord- og kystvannet på Vestlandet skyldes store forekomster av kalkalger. Denne typer alger er ufarlige for mennesker og dyr, men de er også godt synlige fra verdensrommet. Den europeiske miljøsatellitten Envisat er derfor et nyttig overvåknings-verktøy for å kartlegge utbredelsen av disse algeblomstringene.

The Nansen Center @ IPY 2010 Oslo Science Conference

The Nansen Center is heavily represented at the International Polar Year (IPY) Oslo Science Conference during this week. Scientists from the Center deliver five oral presentations and 10 posters (program at the below link). The Center is also present at the PolarEXPO at Lillestrøm and the PolarFESTIVAL at the Oslo city hall square (Rådhusplassen).

The Nansen Center pioneered satellite observations of Arctic sea ice three decades ago, using passive microwave data.

Nansen-Tutu senter for havmiljøstudier åpnet på Universitetet i Cape Town

Erkebiskop Desmond Mpilo Tutu inviterte i dag til signering av avtalen om etablering av Nansen-Tutu senteret for havmiljøstudier i Cape Town. Ambassadør Tor Christian Hildan åpnet senere på dagen senteret på Universitet i Cape Town.

Vacancy: Post Doctoral Position in Regional Climate Modeling

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Bergen, Norway, offers a post doctoral fellowship position under the research project A User-Defined Approach To Utilize Climate Change Information In Local Implementation Of National Construction Standards (RECON). The fellowship is funded for 3 years (2010 – 2013). The RECON project aims to improve utility of the climate change information at the regional and local-scales.


Archbishop emeritus Desmond Mpoilo Tutu is the patron and will be hosting the inauguration event in his office on May 20, 2010 in Cape Town, when seven partner institutions in South Africa, Norway and the USA come together to sign a collaborative agreement on the establishment of the “Nansen-Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research”.

Oseanograf og meteorolog hedret med prestisjetunge internasjonale priser - holder sine prisforedrag på Nansensenteret 18. mai

Professor Water Munk blir hedret av den svenske Kongen med Crafoord prisen for sitt arbeide med bruk av lydsignal for å kartlegge miljø- og klimaendringer i havet. Professor Klaus Hasselmann blir hedret med den spanske Frontier of Knowledge prisen for 2009 for sitt bidrag innen klimamodellering.

Walter Munk (1917) er fysikker og oseanograf. Han var den første doktorgradsstudenten til den kjente norske oseanografen Harald Ulrik Sverdrup, direktør ved Scripps Oseanografiske Institutt i California, hvor Munk også senere ble direktør.

Master thesis on Acoustic Tomography in the Fram Strait

Svein Arild Haugen completed his Master degree with the thesis " Acoustic Tomography in the Fram Strait: - Predicted and measured travel times". Supervisors were Halvor Hobæk from Institute of Physics and Technology and Dr. Hanne Sagen at the Nansen Center. The opponent was Dag Tollefsen from Norwegian Defense Research Establishment. The work is part of the ongoing EU DAMOCLES and ACOBAR projects at the Nansen Center.

Paper published on Arctic sea ice thickness by NIERSC and NERSC

A paper on sea ice thickness retrieval from freeboard data is published in The Cryosphere Discussions 4, 641-661, 2010 with title "The relation between sea ice thickness and freeboard in the Arctic" by Vitaly Alexandrov, Stein Sandven, Johan Wåhlin and Ola M. Johannessen. The paper is available at the link below and is open for interactive discussion.


Retrieval of Arctic sea ice thickness from radar altimeter freeboard data, to be provided by CryoSat-2, requires observational data to verify the relation between the two variables.

Successful launch of a new ice satellite - CRYOSAT 2

The European CryoSat 2 satellite was successfully launched on April 8th at 15:57 European time from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Professor Stein Sandven, director at the Nansen Center, is a member of the ESA CryoSat science team that has contributed to the development of the satellite.

The sea-ice thickness analyses and the latest forecast from TOPAZ are animated on the TOPAZ web-page. This animation will be updated every week.

Book published about radioactivity in the Arctic and Nordic Seas

The book “Radioactivity and Pollution in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Region: Observations, Modelling and Simulations” has been published by Springer-Praxis is book No. 5 in the Nansen Center´s Polar Series. The authors are Ola M. Johannessen, Vladimir A. Volkov, Lasse H. Pettersson, Vladimir S. Maderich, Mark J. Zheleznyak, Yongqi Gao, Leonid P. Bobylev, Andrey V. Stepanov, Ivan A. Neelov, Viktor P. Tishkov and Sven P.

Workshop on Acoustic marine observing systems in the Arctic Ocean at The Nansen Center

There are many observing systems under development for use in the Arctic. Acoustic methods are
used in several of these systems such as acoustic tomography/thermometry, transmission from
underwater platforms, communication and navigation of floats and gliders under the ice-cover.

This will be addressed in a workshop at

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Thormøhlensgt 47, Bergen on

March 11.

Florian Geyer completed his PhD degree on 12 February 2010

On Friday 12 February 2010,Florian Geyer defended his PhD thesis at the Nansen Center with title: "Overflow and topographically induced mixing on the Svalbard shelf". The opponents were Dr. Jean-Claude Gascard, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, and Dr Sc. Vigdis Tverrberg, Norwegian Polar Institute. The PhD degree was awarded by the Faculty of Sciences at University of Bergen, and the defence was headed by Prof. emeritus Eirik Sundvor.

Nansen winter school 2010 was opened in India

The Nansen Winter School 2010 was opened to day in Cherai in Kerala. 48 Indian Ph.D. students are gathered and during the next five days they will learn more about the Indian Ocean: Challenges in Meteorology and Oceanography. 19 lecturers from India, Norway, France and UK will during the winter school address key research topics related to the monsoon system, the Indian ocean circulation and modelling, sea level change, algal blooms and remote sensing.

NERSC @ IPY science conference in June in Oslo

NERSC will be represented with 13 presentations at the IPY conference in Oslo in 8 to 12 June 2010.

New Director at the Nansen Center

Founding Director Ola M. Johannessen retired as Director of the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center after 23 years work the 31/12-2009. Stein Sandven is now employed as Director for the next two years from 1/1-2010, with Dr. Johnny A. Johannessen as Vice Director.

Ola M. Johannessen (picture) was elected Working Chairman of the Board from 1/1-2010 for the next two years after Bjart Nygaard who will continue in the Board. Dr. Anton Kjelaas will also continue in the Board as Vice Chairman.

Stort løft for forskningsbruk av satellitt data

Norges forskningsråd bevilger 25 millioner til etablering av en satellitt database for marin og polar forskning.

”Satellittdatabasen vil være et viktig norsk bidrag til den internasjonale klimaforskningen og bidra til kunnskapsgrunnlaget som er ”navet” i Regjeringens nordområdestrategi. På sikt vil prosjektet få betydning for næringer som norsk skipsfart, oljeleting, meteorologi og forvalting av havområder.”, sier prosjektkoordinator Prof. Johnny A.
