Education

The Nansen Center contributes to education of Ph.D. and Master students in Earth sciences. This includes providing (external) supervision by its permanent research staff, research and working infrastructure, promoting international scientific exchange visits, as well as funding either through external project funds or internal financial sources. A University institution, primarily the University of Bergen, awards the formal degrees to the students at the Nansen Center. During the last 35 years the Center has been responsible for supervision and hosting of 56 Doctoral dissertations and 65 Master students, mainly graduated from the University of Bergen. Currently three Ph.D. candidates and four master students are supervised/employed at the Nansen Center.

Within the Nansen Centers an extensive exchange of scientists, “post-docs” and Ph.D. candidates is fostering scientific cooperation and joint publications. A Nansen Fellowship program is providing a monthly stipend, external supervision from scientists at the Center and supporting research mobility for Ph.D. candidates offering three months visits per year at one of the other research centers in the Nansen Group or its cooperating partners.

The Nansen Center also organize and host thematic summer/winter schools at Ph.D. level. These schools, of typical one week duration, have been organized in Norway/Svalbard or at KV Svalbard (2006, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2021), Russia (2009, 2014, 2019), China (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016), India (2010, 2013, 2016, 2018) and South Afica (2014, 2021), involving students and young scientist from many countries.

The Nansen Scientific Society is instrumental in funding training among students and young scientists, including the Nansen Centers summer schools for graduate students.

Nansen Center scientists teach a regular course in Data Assimilation for graduate and undergraduate at the Dept. of Mathematics of the University of Bergen. The course is open to all students and young scientists who are interested, with not limitation to those enrolled at the Dept. of Mathematics. Full information can be found here
