Variable Conditions Challenge Mariners and Ice Forecasters

Helsinki, Finland, September 28, 2018 – The International Ice Charting Working Group (IICWG) convened its 19th annual meeting September 24-28 in Helsinki, Finland hosted by the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The theme for the meeting was “Ice Information for Navigating the Sub-Polar Seas”.

Cavitation noise from the research ice-breaker dominated the sound scape at times.

Challenges in sea ice retrieval methods using satellite microwave radiometers

Dr Natalia IvanovaSea ice concentration has been retrieved in polar regions with satellite microwave radiometers for over 30 years. Sea ice information providers, including EUMETSAT's OSISAF, ArcticROOS/Nansen Center, Copernicus OSI-TAC, NSIDC, University of Bremen and others, produce daily updates of the Arctic Sea ice area and extent.
