IceMotion: High resolution sea-ice motion from Synthetical Aperture Radar using pattern tracking and Doppler shift

IceMotion will provide new SAR-derived sea ice motion data based on combined use of
feature tracking and Doppler shift data for research and monitoring in ice-covered Polar seas.

Sea-ice motion is an essential variable to observe from EO data, because it strongly influences the distribution of sea-ice on different spatial and temporal scales. Ice drift causes advection of ice from one region to another and export of ice from the Arctic Ocean to the sub-Arctic seas. The proposal will exploit Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from Sentinel-1and Radarsat-2 for sea ice research and prepare for operational use of Sentinel-1 data. SONARC: Development of sea ice monitoring and forecasting system to support safe operations and navigation in Arctic Seas

SONARC is a NORRUSS project contributing to research cooperation between Norway and Russia with focus on satellite technology for safe navigation and maritime operations in the Arctic. SONARC was running from April 2015 to November 2018

The main objective of SONARC is to develop a sea ice monitoring and forecasting system to support safe operations and navigation in Arctic Seas. SONARC has exploited Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from satellites as a major component of this system. From 2015 Sentinel-1 has been the main provider of SAR data, deliverig data every day in near realtime for monitoring of sea ice and other environmental parameters.

Ocean Flagship: Ocean Flagship

The Ocean Flagship is established bringing together main partners involved in the long-term ocean observations around Svalbard. The project will initiate a new Svalbard Science Forum (SSF) flagship program.

The main goal of the proposed SSF Ocean Flagship is to increase scientific cooperation between all countries and institutions actively involved in the marine research in the Svalbard area. At present the individual elements of the ocean observing system in Fram Strait and the European Arctic are mostly project-related and therefore relatively dispersed and independent. Moreover, the information flow between different players in ocean observations is rather limited.
