The aim of HABILE is to assess and quantify the environmental conditions required for the formation of identified HAB in three European Large Marine Ecosystems, with the following specific objectives:

(1) To better understand the processes that lead to HAB events by the environmental characterisation of long-term historical HAB events in Baltic Sea, North Sea and Iberian coast.

(2) To model the response of the identified HAB species to variable environmental conditions with focus on anthropogenic impacts through nutrient enrichment and ratios.

(3) To improve existing HAB-related numerical ecosystem models, and in turn the capability to simulate the occurrence and extent of future HAB events under various environmental/anthropogenic development scenarios.

(4) To asses the impact of changes in nutrient compounds on the initiation of identified blooms, the competition between algal species and the succession of blooms during the growth season.

(5) To assess the socio-economic impact of a reduction of HAB on fisheries, food, and tourism industries.
